Relishing the year
Bhutan celebrated one of its biggest inspirations this year, His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo. From numerous activities nationwide to personal reflections, I am ever inspired. Inspired to be a better citizen, to be a better person.
A helping hand

Ever had a King fetch a firewood for you? Before you call it a fairy tale, here is a true account.
With the winter approaching, Wangzo and her daughter went to the nearby forest in Tashidingkha, a community in the north of Thimphu, to collect firewood.
The pain in her knee slowed her down while returning with the firewood bunched on her back. The 67-year-old couldn’t keep pace with her daughter. When she finally caught up, she found her daughter taking a breather. Sitting next to her was a man wearing a black gho.
The daughter was quick to let her know that the man was none other than His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo.
Her heart raced. Before she could catch her breath, His Majesty asked whether she went to fetch the firewood. Soon after, His Majesty offered to carry the firewood for her.
Humbled, Wangzo refused saying it might ruin His Majesty’s gho. That went unheeded.
His Majesty carried her daughter’s load while the attendant with His Majesty took Wangzo’s. They climbed the slope of about 100 metres that led to Wangzo’s home.
Gently offloading at the doorstep, His Majesty said the firewood was very heavy.
For Wangzo, who spent her entire life as a farmer, this was the most propitious moment she experienced. Her life had been difficult, having to raise six grandchildren from her son and daughter. Her husband, an ex-army, was on pension. Amid such hardship, a personal moment as this with her King was a reassurance of better days ahead.
She decided to save the collection of firewood next to the altar. It was now her sacred relic. The story is from one fine day in August and even today, those firewood remain wrapped in white scarf.
A week after the eventful day, His Majesty passed by her house one more time. Over a brief stop, His Majesty asked whether those firewood were good to use. Wangzo replied that she preserved them as a sacred relic in her altar room.
His Majesty said she should consider burning them before insects infiltrate the woods. Wangzo was also told not to sell the small plot of land she owned in that area.
A few days later, Wangzo received a television set from His Majesty.

As a Brazilian, I want to express my great admiration for the Fourth Druk Gyalpo.
His marvelous conception of GNH and his rejection of crass materialism render him an example of the kind of world leader that is sorely needed.
Bhutan's GNH philosophy is truly a new development paradigm.
